Shopify theme update checklist: product page to checkout

Use this checklist before and after a theme, app, or content update. Start with one product shoppers can actually buy. Most steps are manual; CartTelltale helps you recheck one selected storefront element.

Before the change: keep a known-good reference

Keep a copy of your current theme. Duplicate the theme and note what you plan to change. A theme copy is not a backup of inventory, app settings, or your entire store.
Choose one stable product URL. Use an in-stock product. Note the variant, viewport, and any popups that affect the button. Manually verify that the current Add to cart action works.
Optionally save a CartTelltale baseline. Open that product page, select Add to cart in the extension, reopen the popup, and choose Save baseline. Save it while the page is in the state you want to compare against.

In the theme preview: walk through a real shopping task

Check desktop and mobile layouts. Confirm the product title, price, images, variant options, and purchase button are readable. Watch for banners or app widgets covering important controls.
Switch variants and add a product to the cart. Manually check the selected variant, quantity, price, and cart updates. Repeat for a sold-out variant if your store has one.
Test checkout separately. Follow Shopify’s test-order instructions using the method appropriate for your store. Restore normal payment settings if you changed them. CartTelltale does not place orders or verify payment, shipping, discounts, or checkout completion.

After publishing: recheck before replacing your baseline

Return to the exact saved product URL. Use the same variant and viewport where possible. A draft-theme preview URL and the live URL are different; do not compare them as if they were the same page.
Choose Recheck now. Review the result before saving another baseline. Looks good means the selected element passed the implemented checks, not that checkout works. Review change needs your judgement. Problem found needs investigation on the page.
Repeat the manual cart check on the live store. Only save a replacement baseline after confirming that the new state is intentional and works. Do not overwrite the old baseline just to clear a warning.
